2010 STIHL Tour des Trees

Greetings!

We are now less than 3 months away from the 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees "Chicago Loop Tour"! As an update to the participant list we currently have 50 riders signed up to join us.

This year's Tour kicks off with a benefit concert on Saturday, July 17 featuring the talents of Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell. "It's Ours to Save: An Intimate Evening with Chuck Leavell" doubles as a fundraiser and the welcome dinner for the cyclists of the 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees, who will attend as guests of the TREE Fund.  See below for full details on the concert, and instructions for ordering additional tickets. The Tour officially launches on Sunday at 10 am from Millennium Park, headlining a full morning of events celebrating trees and the people who love them.

The "Chicago Loop Tour" will begin with a ride along the beautiful Lakefront Bike Trail on the shores of Lake Michigan before arriving at the scenic Illinois Beach Resort in Zion.  From Zion the Tour cycles west to the Mississippi River; then south along the Great Mississippi River Trail to the Quad Cities before turning eastward toward Princeton and finally Naperville, the home of the TREE Fund. The 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees concludes July 24 with the "Ride for Research", a 35-mile "fun ride" through Chicago's western suburbs. We expect 100+ additional day-riders to join us for the day, which includes an informative visit to Fermilab before lunch, a victory lap of the Morton Arboretum and our Closing Ceremonies during the ISA Tree Climbing Championships.

TOUR  NOTES

  1. First let me start out this month's notes by correcting a mistake I had made last month in improperly identifying the sponsor for out tour massage therapists. Kenny & Katie Askew will once again be on hand to take care of your aching muscles thanks to Rose Epperson and the West Coast Arborists!
  2. We are still working to finalize the arrival and shuttle plans but I can not over emphasize the importance of shipping your bike ahead of time per the instructions in the previous newsletter.
  3. Our host hotel in Chicago on Saturday July the 17th is the Doubletree Magnificent Mile for which I will provide a rooming list based on the information you provided when registering for the Tour.
    • For those wishing to arrive early I have set up a block at a rate of $159 + tax for Friday July the 16th. You may reserve your room by calling (312) 787-6100 and identifying that you are a participant in the STIHL Tour des Trees or by going directly to their reservation page and putting in "TDT" as the group code
  4. The "Chicago Loop Tour" isn't exactly a loop but will instead finish in Naperville, the hometown of the TREE Fund, on Friday July the 23rd. Our host hotel in Naperville is the Holiday Inn Select.

Chuck Leavell, conservationist, Tree Farmer, and legendary keyboardist for the Rolling Stones, will perform at the Omni Chicago Hotel on July 17, 2010 to benefit the Tree Research and Education Endowment (TREE) Fund and the American Forest Foundation. David Spero,  a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Board of Directors and longtime friend of Leavell, will join Leavell for an evening of good food, great music and stories in the key of "green".

"The American Forest Foundation and the TREE Fund are extraordinary organizations  working tirelessly to improve the care of trees and the environment," said Leavell. "I have a true passion for the conservation of our forests, and to be able to combine my love for the environment and my love for music for this event is such an honor."

Doors open for"An Intimate Evening with Chuck Leavell" at 6 p.m. at the Omni Chicago Hotel. The three-hour benefit includes a dinner buffet and Leavell at the piano, with Spero providing commentary and opportunities for audience interaction. Tickets are $100, and attendance is limited to 200. As a participate of the STIHL Tour des Trees you will be provided a ticket to this benefit concert by the TREE Fund.
